Right now personally, I don't use any of these tools because
I don't have a need to, but who knows what the future holds.

I work in a department where it is easy to communicate with those I work with
because we are all in the same room. Twitter would come in handy if one of us
had to send a quick message to someone in another department or location.
Twitter is also a quick way to communicate to the public for something that
is happening right now that you think people would be interested in. So I would
say that Twitter would be a useful tool in connecting to the public.
Linkedin would be good to keep in touch with other people who work at
other libraries and to see what is going on. May be a quick way of getting
ideas that we haven't thought of and utilizing those ideas right away or when
it's needed.

Second Life and 3-D Virtual Reality

I know very little about Second Life and 3-D Virtual Reality. I was introduced
to this when our department had a meeting one day. During that meeting
Second Life was talked about and we even watched a demonstration from
a computer.
To me Second Life and 3-D Virtual Reality looks like a fascinating world to explore,
an adventure worth taking, to see what's over the horizon. It's where we can learn
new things in a whole different environment and might even gain a new perspective.
We may see things in a way in which we never thought possible. What may also
happen is that it might help to create a new outlook on life.
It could be used in the library as a tool for people to increase awareness
and look at things differently. It may lead to someone getting a
new perspective on any information they may be pursuing.

Darkside of the web-internet malware from 1-6-09

I don't usually click on anything that looks suspicious. I've gotten e-mail where
the sender would put (re:) in front of their sender name, making it look
like I sent them something and they are replying. I was on to that and I
deleted those.
Within the past few years I had my bank card replaced. This was something
that the bank discovered. I tried at 2 different computers in
2 different departments here at the Main library. I did make an effort to look
up the pictures from my department where I work. I didn't find them.
So, in the interest of Orlando Memory, I will share this. I remember when I first moved to
Orlando, Florida back in the early 1980's there were many orange groves,
almost everywhere you looked. By and by, over the years, many developments
were built, which meant the orange groves had to go. There are many
times that I traveled through the intersection of Goldenrod Rd. and University Blvd.
and would think about what it looked like back when I first came here to Florida.
Both University and Goldenrod were 2 lanes, and orange groves abounded.
Now both those roads are 4 lanes and there are no orange groves. The road
expansion came after the shopping centers were built there, after the orange
groves were taken away. I know that Florida still has orange groves, but they
are few and far between.
Orlando Memory is important to us especially if you have lived in Florida for
quite a while. You can see all the changes that have happened over the years.
It's quite amazing! For people just moving here, they can catch a glimpse of
what Florida was then and is now. The Orange Seed encourages all of us here
to share ideas and to implement them, and to try to make improvements in our lives.
That makes The Orange Seed important.

Web 2.0 continues fom 11-18-2008

The two other sites that I looked at were the health page and the education page.
I looked at the the health page because I am interested in it.
The things I found that are available are sites such as:
revolutionHealth. It's a go-to source for on-line health information, which include things
such as articles, polls and discussion. Then there was PEERtrainer. With this site you can
connect with other people of similar interests, in this case training and fitness. This would
help in keeping the lines of communication open. It's like a support group to help keep you
healthy and people who share the same goals as you. Then there was also iMedix. Here you
can find and then share information about health with other people of this online resource.
I found these to be very valuable resources to keep up to date on being healthy.
I also looked at the education page. There was a site called.docstoc. This is a compilation
of documents, such as legal, educational, technical, and business. They can be downloaded
for free, and you upload your own files in a number of formats. Then there was Mango.
This would put you into total immersion language learning through the internet. It would
expose students to conversations with native speakers. How cool is that!. There was also
SpanishPod. This would enable someone to go through 183 free Spansish lessons and read
5030 Spanish conversations, improving these skills and connect with other students.
I could have used this when I took Spanish classes.

Open Source From Oct. 7

Since joining OCLS many years ago, technology has changed the way I use
and provide information through the opportunities available with the
Orange Peel. This has helped to keep updated on what is going with
the library and other current events. The E-mail has helped significantly
as it enables to send information back and forth quickly to keep up
with what is going not just in our departments but also in the rest
of the library. The use of halogen enable us to keep track of our daily
activities and aide us in doing our yearly evaluations. I found that to be
a tremendous asset in providing information.
I like the idea of open source. Number one it's free, but also being to
share, change and modify. I think it's important to have DRM
and copyrights in all its forms to ensure protection of an
individual and/or groups work. We need to respect that.
I like the fact that Berne Convention made copyrighting
automatic. Once I figured out how to do this and saw all the
different RSS feeds I could choose from I got excited. It was fun picking out
the ones that I liked. I found Grokker's site to be interesting and user friendly.
I looked up something on North Carolina Beaches, since I will be traveling to
one in the near future. It was great to be learning something new. I enjoyed
this site. I learn better with visual aid, so it great to have all these options to
choose from. Learn 2.0 has opened a whole new world for me and it works well
for me.

Blog Lesson #1

April 30, 2007

My name is Mary Moyers. This is my first blog. I am excited about this course and am
looking forward to learning more. For me it will be a challenge. I was born and raised in the
state of Maryland. I lived in College Park, then in Silver Spring. I was 21 when I moved
down to Florida. I started working for The Orlando Public Library on October 28, 1987.
I got married on May 20, 1989 to Joe Moyers and we are still together.
I have a cat named Phraser. He is 7 years old now. He likes to play with water, drink water
from the tub spicket, and likes to be squirted with water. That to me is what makes him
unique because most cats don't like water.
My favorite hobby is quilting. Although I haven't made one lately, I'm always buying
material. This is so when I do find a pattern that I like, i can just look through my
collectiion. I like matching up the different colors. It's a form a therapy for me. It
helps to get away from it all. I really enjoy it. I have other hobbies like crocheting,
knitting, and needlepoint. I also enjoy bowling and ice-skating. I also enjoy traveling.
My husband and I have traveled through about half the states and Canada. I enjoy
cruising in my car and listening to music. I like the music from the sixties and seventies,
butI do listen to country, classical. and some music from the nineties and today as well.
I have B.S. in Psychology.
